Dorotha Williams Gridley passed away on May 21, 2020 at Rockledge Regional Hospital, Rockledge, FL. She was a resident of Palm Cottages Residential Care in Rockledge, FL. Dorotha’s outgoing personality, caring nature and love of people will be greatly missed by all she touched.
She was born February 27, 1925 in Caton, NY and married Russell Williams in 1945 (60 years). They lived in Elmira, NY until 1977 when they moved to North Carolina then to Melbourne, FL in 2002. Russell died in 2005, and Dorotha Married Chester Gridley of Caton, NY in 2006. Following Chester’s death in 2013, Dorotha met her special friend and companion Mat Wilson of Melbourne, FL.
Dorotha was Executive Assistant to the President of Chemung Canal Bank in Elmira, NY for many years and also coordinated their Elmira Scholarship Program. She was also a Secretary at American LaFrance, Elmira, NY, Secretary to Supervising Psychiatrist at Elmira Reception Center, Secretary to President at Elmira Savings Bank.
After many years of training and studies she achieved her Certified Professional Secretary designation in 1971. She went above and beyond to mentor others and teach evening classes in the CPS program. She was President, of the local Glider Chapter of CPS and President of the New York State CPS with her 19 years as a member. She was recognized as Secretary of the Year in 1981. She earned her B.A. Degree from Elmira College. Her community involvement included Treasurer of the Chemung County Humane Society, Member and Past President of Elmira Heights Business and Professional Women’s Club, Member of the Elmira Grottoettes, and Member of Eastern Star.
In her Senior years she was an active member of Grief Support Groups in Melbourne, FL and participated in activities and events throughout the area. She created a singing group and played piano.
Dorotha was preceded in death by her parents, John Winters and Mae Winters Buckley, her sister, Wanda (Richard) Davies, Russell Williams, Chester Gridley, and Mat Wilson. She is survived by her son Lawrence (Sandy) Williams, Twin Grandsons Robert and Gerald Williams, nephew David (Connie) Davies, Step Daughters, Elaine Gridley Murphy, Judy Gridley (Tom) Riff, Step Son Brian (Judi) Gridley, and special friend Scott (Yata/Dang) Wilson.
Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home of Viera, Fl has been entrusted with the arrangements. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Caton United Methodist Church, 11186 Hendy Hollow Road, Corning, NY 14830.
