William (Bill) Daniel Haggerty

William Daniel Haggerty, 71, a Vietnam War Army veteran died Monday, April 23, 2018, at his home in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Born in Welch, West Virginia on August 17th, 1946, Bill was the oldest of four children. Being an "Army Brat", Bill’s family moved from West Virginia to the Cleveland area, and later relocated to Maryland. From 1955 to 1958 home was Frankfurt, Germany. From 1958 to 1962 home was Ft. Monroe, Virginia.

From 1962 to 1963 home was Tokyo, Japan. From 1963 to 1967 home was Ft. Shafter, Hawaii. It was there that Bill graduated from high school in 1965, "and to the distress of his mother, Anna Mae" followed in his father's (Sergeant Major Joseph E. Haggerty) footsteps and enlisted in the Army.

Bill served 3 years, which included a deployment to Vietnam in the 1967-68 time-frame. He was a Combat Infantryman and Aircraft Crewman of the 1st Cavalry Division. His last duty assignment was as a Military Policeman at Fort Monroe, Virginia. This is where he completed his service and was honorably discharged.

Bill moved back to live at home with his family. It was during this period that Bill would meet his future wife, Jennifer, who was also active duty Army. His Father, being career Army, continued to be assigned to various posts and that resulted in Bill visiting additional places. From 1970 to 1971 home was Ft. Greeley, Alaska.

From 1972 to 1977 home was Murfreesboro and Wartrace (Smyrna), Tennessee.  It was during this period that Bill and Jennifer were married, having their Son Bill Jr.

Bill was the proverbial jack of all trades". He worked as a mechanical drafter, over-the-road Semi hauler, plastics laminator, shrimp boat deckhand, AAFES PX employee, he worked in restaurants and did construction work.

Bill moved to Merritt Island in1978 and relocated to Cocoa Beach, Florida in 1979.

Bill was a Life Member of the VFW and Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his son, William Haggerty Jr. and two grandchildren (Rocket and Haley) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; brother Patrick Joseph Haggerty and sister, Deborah Haggerty Barker both of Merritt Island, Florida.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery on May 23, 2018 at 1:30 p.m.
