Richard E. Childs, Jr. (Dick) died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on October 2, 2018.
Born on April 29, 1943 in Steelton, Pennsylvania to Richard and Elizabeth, he is survived by his wife, Evelyn; children, Geoffrey (Denise), Valerie (Mark), stepdaughter Nicole, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Dick was a devoted son and dedicated family man. A member of Advent Lutheran Church he often served as a reader, usher and communion assistant. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Combat Infantry Badge Society, MOAA and was instrumental in forming the Suntree Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Also volunteering on several committees for the Suntree HOA.
He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant after graduating from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Serving in the Army for 20 years in the 173rd Airborne he retired at the grade of Lt. Colonel. Awarded Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Cluster, Vietnam Gallantry Cross; twice, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device; Air Medal; Senior Parachute Badge, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Purple Heart. After completing his Army service he worked for the Veterans Affairs Department until retiring in 1997.
The viewing will be at 10:00 at Advent Lutheran Church with service to follow at 11on Saturday, October 6, 2018. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
Interment will take place at Indiantown Gap, Annville, Pennsylvania on October 12, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. Arrangements will be handled by Beckman Williamson in Viera.
