Armand “Steve” Baklor of Melbourne, Florida, passed away on September 13, 2019 at the age of 96 years old. Steve, who called Baltimore home until 2011, is survived by his loving wife Ilene (nee Herman) Baklor; sons Kent (Jennifer Zayer-Taggart) Baklor and Loren (Brooke) Goldfarb; grandchildren Kali Baklor, Kendall Baklor, Marie-Claire “Macie” Goldfarb and Lucas Goldfarb; and many relatives and friends in Maryland, Florida and across the country.
Born in Baltimore on November 1, 1922, Steve was the son of dentist Dr. Max Baklor and world-renowned opera singer and teacher Elsa Baklor who infused her only child with a life-long passion for music and theater.
As a young boy with a razor-sharp wit and a penchant for practical jokes, Steve frequently ran afoul of authority figures, compelling his parents to send him to military school to whip him into shape. The ensuing decades would prove the effort futile.
Steve’s experiences in World War II shaped the rest of his life. He was a gifted writer who penned numerous essays and poems about the war, some humorous, others hauntingly sad. Steve witnessed the atrocities at Dachau, the notorious concentration camp. As an Army photographer, he was tasked with documenting the crimes of the Nazis.
Following the war and college, Steve became an educator and administrator in the Baltimore City school system and taught Hebrew on the side. Many of his students kept in contact with Steve decades after they left the classroom. One of his former students – now in his 60s – traveled to Florida to visit him in the months before Steve passed.
While Steve spent much of his life teaching others, he never stopped being a student himself. He was a passionate learner with an insatiable curiosity. He attended adult education classes into his 90s and was a regular at Saturday morning bible study.
With a wide, inviting smile and kind soul, Steve made friends across generations with ease. He cherished each and every relationship. He loved sharing stories and jokes, and laughed when his family teased him about telling the same ones over and over again.
Memorial services will be held at Temple Israel of Brevard County, 7350 Lake Andrew Drive, Melbourne, FL 32940 on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 1pm followed by a meal of condolence. Please omit flowers. Contributions in Steve’s memory may be sent to Temple Israel.
