Dolores Anne (Brand) PattersonJuly 10, 1937 ~ August 31, 2017 (age 80)
Dolores Anne (Brand) Patterson, 80, of Suntree, FL, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017, in her home. Dolores was a devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, volunteer and friend to so many people over the course of her life. Dolores was born on July 10, 1937, in Indianapolis, IN, daughter of the late Leo August Brand and Bertha (Hoffman) Brand. She graduated from Holy Name School in 1951 in Beech Grove, IN and St. Mary’s High School in 1955 in Indianapolis. She completed nurses training at St. Vincent’s in 1956 before joining Eastern Airlines in Indianapolis in November 1957. She enjoyed a 13.5 year career in the Reservations department of the airline (calling Atlanta, Charlotte and Miami home) and traveled to 4 continents before settling down and getting married to the late John J Patterson Sr in Miami in 1971. Later that same year, they welcomed John Jr. to the world, and nothing meant as much to Dolores as being a mother until her last breath 45 years later. She volunteered at each of John’s schools in the 70s & 80s (Sunshine South Academy, Leewood Elementary, F.C. Martin, Arvida Junior and Killian HS) as well was an active member of the parish communities at St. Catherine of Siena (1971-1980) and St. John Neumann (1980-1994). The Patterson family took full advantage of the airline pass and Eastern’s generous vacation policy to visit 40+ states and 15 countries across North America and Europe together. Their favorite summer spot away from the heat and humidity of South Florida was Timberlake Campground in Whittier, NC. Surviving Hurricane Andrew (1992) and the final tuition bill from Harvard (1994) were the final memories Dolores had of Dade County before the empty nesters moved to Melbourne in the summer of 1994, where she lived the rest of her life. Before her husband’s death in 2006, Dolores enjoyed spending summers in Maine and being a part of John Jr’s life in New York with his wife Ellen Reilly Patterson (married 1997). Dolores remained active in multiple Brevard faith communities including Ascension Parish (1994-2001), St. John The Evangelist (2001-2017) and the Council of Catholic Women, and often attended Senior Adventures in Learning (SAIL) classes in her final years. Becoming a grandmother to Luke and Claire gave her a new sense of purpose and pride the last decade of her life. She is survived by her son’s family in New Jersey along with her brother, Kenneth J. Brand of Cincinnati, OH. Services will be held on Monday, October 9 at St. John The Evangelist, 5655 Stadium Drive, Melbourne FL 32940, at 10:30 a.m., with a gathering for family and friends to follow. Memorial donations may be made to the St. John Evangelist Catholic Community Building Fund, 5655 Stadium Drive, Melbourne, FL 32940 or by calling (321) 637-9650. Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home of Viera is in charge of arrangements.
